This is where we’ll share the latest updates, public statements, Freedom of Information requests, campaign actions, media coverage and ways to get involved with Gloucestershire Maternity Action Group.
GMAG was formed in response to the suspension of home birth services and the wider threat to community-based, midwife-led maternity care in Gloucestershire. This page will help keep a clear public record of what is happening, what questions are being asked, and what action is being taken.
We believe women and families deserve transparent information, lawful consultation, and genuine access to safe, local maternity choices — including home birth, birth centres and continuity of care. If you would like to support the campaign through research, admin, media work, community outreach, legal support, events or practical help, please get in touch.
A Case for Change - Key Problems
Gloucestershire NHS Trust have spent the last 6 months waiting for this document to be produced but reads more like a high-level slide deck of assumptions than a serious evidence base for major maternity transformation.
Join our panel discussion to create a formal critique and proper case to be made.

FOI request — records evidencing consideration of alternatives to full suspension of the home birth service
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has stated that alternatives to suspending the home birth service were considered.
We want to see whether options such as independent midwifery support, mutual aid from neighbouring NHS Trusts, increased on-call cover, a dedicated home birth team, or maintaining support for women already booked for home birth were properly explored, risk assessed and costed before the service was suspended.
Freedom of Information Request: Stakeholder Consultation on Home Birth Suspension
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has referred to consultation and engagement with a wide range of organisations and internal committees in relation to the suspension of the home birth service.

FOI Request: Gloucestershire’s Current Postnatal Care Pathway
GMAG has submitted this FOI request because we are being told one thing publicly and another by staff on the ground. At the ICB meeting, we were told there was no “new” postnatal pathway, yet staff report internal communications referring to a new pathway. This request seeks clarity on when the current pathway was introduced, what documents define it, and what staff have been told internally.
Update on ICB Meeting – 14th May
On 14th May, GMAG attended the NHS Gloucestershire Trust Board meeting, where Trust leaders confirmed maternity services are entering a major redesign process. FOI Request – Internal Proposal and Rationale for Reinstating Home Birth Services
GMAG has submitted a Freedom of Information request asking what evidence, figures and safety models Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has used when developing its current proposal for reinstating home birth services. Continuity of midwifery care is one of the strongest evidence-based models for improving women’s experiences and reducing intervention, so the public has a right to know why this has not been prioritised.
Freedom of Information Request – Independent Midwife Provision for Planned Home Birth Support
FOI request seeking clarity on whether Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has properly explored using Independent Midwives to support planned home birth provision, and what discussions, risk assessments, costings and decisions have shaped the current plans for community birth services.
